Description

A welding earth clamp, also known as a ground clamp, is an essential component in welding equipment. It is used to establish an electrical connection between the welding machine and the workpiece being welded. This connection is vital for completing the welding circuit and ensuring safe and efficient welding operations.

welding earthing holder

The welding earthing holder is ideal for professional users looking for an earthing clamp made of robust materials, such as die-cast brass and steel, to ensure optimum conductivity. It features a robust and secure cable clamping system

for welding earthing holders, spring loaded for secure connections. Important equipment for all forms of welding. Heavy-duty and heavy-duty springs.

Always ground the welding operation securely (not to be used for tapping rods or re-tapping) and always ensure that your grounding clamps, cables and connections are in good condition.

Welding earthing holder types

Pressed steel welding earthing holder

Grounding clamps with pressed steel construction, steel contacts and copper shunts.

The cable is screwed directly to the contact area.

Rust-proof steel welding earthing holder

Grounding clamps with rust-proof steel construction.

Copper-plated brass contacts and copper pigtails.

Die-cast welding earthing holder

Die-cast earthing holder

Cable clamps with crimp connectors.

Condition, quality and design of the welding earthing holder

We often see many weld quality and welder performance issues caused by grounding clamps that are either a) in poor condition or b) poorly designed grounding clamps. Yes, it's a basic piece of equipment, but it can make all the difference!

First, let's be straightforward.

No, the welding earthing holder is not just an accessory that holds metal together! All welding current passes through the grounding clip. Without a good ground connection, the performance of the welder and the welder suffers ...... This can only mean one thing: poor quality welds.

What if the ground clamp is in poor condition or poor quality?

If the ground clamp is in poor condition, it can cause welding current leakage or restriction. Or in other words, it will cause the weld output voltage to drop ...... This is like someone changing the settings on the welder. (For example, if you are MIG welding, the wire speed may seem to be going up).

Often, the operator's first reaction is to change the machine settings to compensate, rather than the real cause of the problem.

How does this happen?

Remember; all weld current passes through the ground clamp. Or, if you are using a cable lug, all the current goes through the lug. If the lug is not installed properly with the clamp or cable, obviously this will limit the weld current.

There are usually 3 "connection" areas on the welding earthing holder that can cause current leakage/blockage.

Cable to welding earthing holder, usually the cable lug: the lug is probably the worst problem here! They may be difficult to install correctly, cables may pull out of the lug, lug bolts/terminals may come loose, etc.!

Inside the welding earthing holder itself: damaged or worn parts, poor fixture design.

The connection between the welding earthing holder and the job: may be affected by weak fixture springs, worn or damaged fixture jaws, fixture corrosion, etc.

... And it only gets worse.

As soon as a "connection" problem occurs in a grounded clamp, the affected component will begin to heat up. The heat then accelerates the initial problem, causing further damage to the connection, which then causes more heat, so the cycle continues.

Poor connection quality = limited welding current = overheating = problem gets worse

Check your welding earthing holder regularly to ensure that the cable lug is securely mounted and bolted. Replace clamps if they are deteriorated, e.g. weak springs, broken parts, constant overheating, etc.

Don't: Just shake your welding earthing holder and reconnect it... This will not solve the problem

DO: Use only good quality, well-designed grounding clamps.
